The department
The School of Business and Sciences offers the degree of B.Sc. in Fisheries Science. The degree is normally completed in a period of three years, comprising a total of 180 credits (ECTS). The hallmark of the department is the integration of subjects within the fields of science, commerce and technology, giving it a strong interdisciplinary character.
Role
The department of fisheries science does not merely attempt to keep up with developments in the Icelandic fishing industry, it also makes an effort to assume a leading role, e.g. by forming direct contacts with fisheries research institutes which share premises with the department and by engaging expert lecturers from the various disciplines of the fishing industry. Specialists from the Akureyri branch of the Icelandic Marine Research Institute and the Icelandic food research (Matís) also have teaching duties at the University of Akureyri. Furthermore, the students are given practical assignments in fishing companies.
Goal
The goal of the department of fisheries science is to provide the students with an education in all the fundamental aspects of the fishing industry and train them in the use of professional methods in policy formation, decision making and general administration within the field. Graduates in fisheries science from the University of Akureyri should have the professional qualifications relevant to most areas within the fishing industry.
Output
Maintaining close cooperation and interaction within the field of fisheries, the aim of the Fisheries Science program is to prepare students for various administrative positions in the fishing industry and food production. The multi-disciplinary nature of the basic studies also serves as a strong basis for further education abroad.
