Research Weeks at the University of Akureyri

An exciting programme of events, held over ten days and hosted by the Centre for Doctoral Studies, announced the growing opportunities for researcher support and development at UNAK.

Experts from RANNÍS, the University of Iceland, Statistics Iceland, plus UNAK academics, and support staff from the Library, UNAK Research Centre, and Centre for Doctoral Studies led workshops, lectures, and training seminars on topics ranging from international research grants and open science to doctoral research at UNAK and the new Icelandic Research Information System (IRIS).

Held between 3-13 October 2022, the Research Weeks offered sessions to researchers at any career stage to discuss the challenges of grant writing, learn more about PhD research, debate the value of open access, and to hear about the services available through the Centre for Doctoral Studies.

Hilal Sen, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Psychology said, “As a new faculty member at UNAK, it was an excellent opportunity to learn what research facilities I have. It was also great to listen to experts and benefit from their suggestions.”

One of the organisers, Research Director Adam Fishwick, said, “This was an important opportunity to showcase the ways in which research and researchers will be supported at UNAK over the coming years. It was fantastic to see enthusiastic engagement from attendees, developing networks and identifying the available support they could access to realise their research plans.”

As well as identifying the right speakers and sessions, a lot of work went into ensuring these weeks would signpost researchers to the expertise and experience they have access to within our university community. The events helped to raise our visibility and the profile of our research community. We hope that more people will benefit from participating in the research days in the future and in that way become familiar with the centre's services - only then will we be able to make the most of the grants available to researchers at the University of Akureyri," said Guðrún Rósa Þórsteinsdóttir, director of the Center for Doctoral Studies.
