Dr. Elísabet Hjörleifsdóttir promoted to the position of Professor in the Faculty of Nursing

Dr. Elísabet Hjörleifsdóttir has been promoted to the position of Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Akureyri as of 1 July 2020. As Elísabet left her position at the University on 30 June last, she is given the title Professor Emerita.

Elísabet began work at the University of Akureyri as a temporary lecturer in the Faculty of Nursing in 1992 and also taught health-related educational material in the Faculty of Education. She received a permanent appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Akureyri in 2003 and was promoted to the position of Associate Professor in 2008.

Since starting work, Elísabet has built up a special field within Nursing at the University that relates to nursing and other health care for individuals who have cancer and those who need palliative care. Elísabet has been head of the specialisation Cancer and Palliative Care in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in the School of Health Sciences. In teaching and mentoring, Elísabet has placed an emphasis on connecting the results of her research with specialised palliative and end-of-life care, concurrently with building up such services and developing them over a 30-year period in Akureyri and surrounding districts.

In Master’s studies at the University of Glasgow, Elísabet emphasised nursing for individuals with cancer and those receiving palliative care. In Doctoral studies at Lund University, she focused on individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

Academic employees at the University of Akureyri can apply for promotion based on education, research activity, teaching and participation in management. Evaluation of applications is in the hands of the University’s Evaluation Committee, which assesses the results and activity of applicants in their work. Following this, the Rector decides on the basis of the opinion of the Evaluation Committee whether to promote the applicant. Evaluation of applications for promotion is consistent with relevant regulations of the University.

Research conducted by Elísabet:

The research of Elísabet and her co-authors has been published in domestic and international scientific journals on health care. The main emphases have been on examining mental and physical well-being, coping, and satisfaction with health services, as well as communication and development of the therapeutic relationship with those who are ill and their families.

Recently, Elísabet has pursued research on stress, burnout and coping among nurses, in collaboration with her Master’s students. The first results have already been published here.
