Mrs. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir honorary doctorate at the University of Akureyri

On November 8th, Mrs. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir will be awarded the honorary doctorate at the University of Akureyri.

Mrs. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir has had a great international influence with her work and has always shown kindness and devotion to the Icelandic youth. She receives the honorary doctorate for her wide positive social impact on the Icelandic language, culture and art, equality and forestry as well as health matter and charity.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was born in Reykjavík on April 15, 1930. She finished her upper secondary education at Reykjavík Junior College 1949. From 1949-1953 Vigdís studied French and French literature at the University of Grenoble. Later she studied the history of theatre at the University of Copenhagen. She graduated with a BA degree in French and English, as well as a professional Graduate certificate in Education from the University of Iceland.

Vigdís has specially supported nurses and is an honorary member of The Icelandic Nurse's Association but her mother was the chairman of that Association for many years.

On the occasion of the award there will be a symposium under the title „Vigdís Finnbogadóttir: Hin víðtæku áhrif“ at the University of Akureyri 8th of November at 10:00-12:00. Scholars and friends from far and wide will give a talk about her life and work. Following the symposium there will be a celebration in the ceremonial hall at the University at 15:00-16:00 were Vigdís will be granted the honorary doctorate.
