Open positions: Vacant positions for an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Nursing

The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Akureyri, Iceland seeks to fill two tenure track positions for Assistant Professors. A part time position is also a possibility. Each position is divided into three main sections: teaching (48%), research (40%), and management (12%). The immediate supervisor will be the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing. The job location is in Akureyri, Iceland.

The intended start date for the positions is the 1st of June 2022. The initial term of the position is five years, after which the candidate can request a permanent position, in line with regulation 257/2016 regarding recruitment and employment of academic staff at the University of Akureyri. Eligibility for employment at the level of Associate or full Professor will be considered as part of the hiring process, in accordance with official criteria for promotion at Icelandic universities.

The School of Health Sciences has 20 academic employees and approximately 700 graduate and undergraduate students. The school is organized into the Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Occupational Therapy and Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The main objective of the nursing program is to educate individuals in the basic subjects of the health sciences, in accordance with the needs of society at each time. Nurses from the University of Akureyri are required to be professionally able to carry out general nursing duties, as well as attending to administration and tutoring in most sectors of the health services. The nursing program at the University of Akureyri, is internationally accredited as a Higher Education program according to the Bologna Declaration. The four-year nursing program (240 ECTS) leads to a Baccalaureate of Science degree. The program is set up in a fulltime flexible learning format with 24 weeks of clinical training. Students are admitted in the fall, following competitive examinations, 75 students with the highest average grade are granted admission to further studies.

Akureyri is a vibrant town of just over 20,000 people in the north-eastern region of Iceland. It is five hours drive from Reykjavik, and there are frequent daily scheduled domestic flights. Required education and qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from a recognised university.
  • Education and experience in accordance with international nursing criteria for the relevant position.
  • Teaching experience at a university level and experience in conducting scientific research are required
  • Good communication and organisational skills are required
  • Good spoken and written English, it is essential that the candidate can teach in English. Good Icelandic language skills or motivation to learn Icelandic would be an advantage.
  • The candidate must comply with the university’s language policy during the term of the employment.

  • A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae including an account of the applicant’s education, employment history, research, list of publications, and teaching background.
  • An account of the applicant’s research plan.
  • Copies of official transcripts of all applicable certificates.
  • Evidence of work experience.
  • Confirmation of valid professional licence.
  • Information regarding the applicant’s teaching and administrative experience.
  • Contact details for three referees, one of whom should ideally be the applicant’s current or prior immediate superior.
  • Publications reflecting the applicant’s most important research project (up to five publications). In the case of multi-author papers, the applicant should clearly outline their contribution to the work.

The extent to which the applicant’s skill set and experience fits the faculty’s teaching and research needs will be heavily weighted when evaluating applications. The salary will be in accordance with the collective agreement between the UNAK Faculty Union (FHA) and the Ministry of Finance.

The processing of applications, assessment of the qualifications of applicants and appointment to the position are conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Act on Higher Education Institutions No. 63/2006, Public Higher Education Institutions No. 85/2008, and regulations of the University of Akureyri No. 387/2009 (amended), and 258/2016 on the work of the selection committee and the recruitment of academic faculty at the University of Akureyri.
