Open position: Dean of the School of Business and Science

The University of Akureyri is accepting applications for the position of Dean of the School of Business and Science

The position of School Dean is a full-time position and consists, for example, in the supervision of all activities and operations of the School, as well as strategy formulation in matters concerning the School according to the Strategy of the University of Akureyri. The immediate supervisor of the Dean is the Rector of the University. It is assumed that the person hired will start work on 1 January 2021. The place of employment is in Akureyri.

The main areas of responsibility of the School Dean are the following (see further information in Regulations for the University of Akureyri no. 387/2009):

  • Implementation and execution of the Strategy of the University within the School.
  • Matters of personnel in the School.
  • Finances, operations and general administration of the School.
  • Supervision of research activity and teaching in the School.
  • Quality of teaching, research and services in the School.
  • Supervision of the domestic and foreign communications of the School.

The School Dean has a seat on the Management Board of the University.

Required education and qualifications:

  • Applicants shall fulfill general qualification requirements for university lecturers within the academic fields taught in the School and have knowledge and experience of academic and/or research work. It is preferable that the person concerned is deemed qualified for at least the position of senior lecturer.
  • A Doctoral degree is a requirement and it is necessary that the degree is within the academic fields taught in the School of Business and Science or very closely connected to their subjects.
  • Good cooperation skills and outstanding communication skills are required.
  • Experience in terms of operations, management and strategy formulation is required.
  • Interest in the leadership role is necessary, as well as ambition to do his/her very best in such a role.
  • Ability to develop and communicate a future vision and ability to develop and lead a team of academic employees are required.
  • Good spoken and written Icelandic and English language skills.

It is possible that the Dean will be involved in teaching and research in the School as part of his/her responsibilities.

Accompanying documents are the following:

  • An account by the applicant on the main emphases in the work of the School Dean, as well as the applicant’s vision for how he/she will develop the School for the future (maximum length of three pages).
  • Overview of education and professional experience.
  • Confirmed copies of diplomas.
  • Letters of reference concerning the applicant’s teaching and management related work, as appropriate.
  • List of publications, as well as an account of scientific work and the scientific publications considered by the applicant to be his/her best works (up to five publications). If the applicant is the co-author of a publication, the applicant shall describe his/her contribution to the work. 

The School Dean is appointed for a four-year term in accordance with Regulations for the University of Akureyri no. 387/2009. The School Dean is appointed by the Rector following an evaluation by the Evaluation Committee on the qualifications of applicants according to Regulations on the Work of the Evaluation Committee and Hiring of Faculty at the University of Akureyri no. 258/2016. Furthermore, the independent assessment of a professional party is used to evaluate the management and communication skills and the management experience of the applicant. A recommendation from the School of Business and Science is also taken into consideration. In appointing the School Dean, an emphasis will be placed on the person hired being as well suited as possible to the circumstances and needs of the School and the University of Akureyri.

The level of compensation is in accordance with the wage agreement between the Association of University Teachers in Akureyri or Association of Public University Professors and the Minister of Finance.
