Residence permits for students are issued to individuals aged 18 and over who plan to study at university level in Iceland, or in programmes that meet university admission requirements. Applicants must be enrolled in full-time studies.
Applicants from outside the EU/EEA must apply for a student residence permit before arriving in Iceland. The application must be approved by the Directorate of Immigration prior to travelling to Iceland.
Citizens of the EU/EEA and EFTA must register their stay in Iceland in accordance with the intended duration of stay.
To ensure that a residence permit is issued before the semester begins, applicants must submit their application and all supporting documents in a timely manner. The Directorate of Immigration sets specific deadlines, and it is the applicant’s responsibility to check and meet these deadlines.
All applications for residence permit for students must be submitted through the Directorate of Immigration.
