For the fifth consecutive year, the Environmental Council at the University of Akureyri has presented its Green Teaching Award, recognising teaching that places sustainability and environmental awareness at its core. This year's award goes to Hreiðar Þór Valtýsson, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Natural Resource Sciences, for his course Marine Biology (sjávarlíffræði).
A course connecting sustainability and the ocean
The course explores marine ecosystems, biodiversity and the sustainable use of marine resources. Sustainability has been an integral part of the course since its inception. Students examine major environmental challenges such as ocean warming and microplastic pollution, while developing an understanding of how their own actions and decisions can help reduce the negative impacts of these human-induced environmental problems.
"Receiving this award is very meaningful to me and encourages me to continue my work. I believe it is extremely important that as many Icelanders as possible—particularly those working in the fishing industry—understand the natural environment that provides us with this vital resource. Understanding enables us to treat it with the respect it deserves," says Hreiðar.
Practical learning at the forefront
Practical learning is a central part of the course. Students take part in a field trip at sea, where they collect samples of marine organisms before analysing them in the laboratory. They also explore underwater ecosystems using an underwater drone, giving them a unique opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with the real marine environment.
Hreiðar is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Natural Resource Sciences. Before joining the University of Akureyri, he served as Branch Director of the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute in Akureyri. His research focuses on marine ecosystems and the utilisation of marine resources in Arctic regions. He has also been actively involved in educational and public engagement projects promoting sustainable fisheries.
The University of Akureyri warmly congratulates Hreiðar on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his valuable contribution to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability through teaching and science communication.
