Last Thursday, Inga Björk Margrétar Bjarnadóttir, PhD student at the University of Iceland and advocate for the rights of disabled people, gave a lecture at the University of Akureyri.
Inga Björk has for many years been an active voice for disability rights, through her work with the human rights organization Þroskahjálp and her participation in public discussions. In her lecture, titled “The University as a Site of Disability Struggle”, she spoke about the position of disabled people within the university community, addressing questions of accessibility, participation, and systemic structures that influence the experiences of students and staff with disabilities.
The lecture was part of an ongoing educational initiative led by the Equality Committee of the University of Akureyri, in line with the university’s equality plan. The event was organized by the chair and staff member of the Equal Rights Committee in collaboration with the university’s Quality and Human Resources. The aim is to strengthen awareness and dialogue around equality, accessibility, and diversity within the university community.
The lecture was offered both on-site and via livestream, and both staff and students of the University of Akureyri took the opportunity to listen to Inga. We sincerely thank her for the presentation and everyone who participated actively in the discussion afterwards.
