Suitable and reasonable locations of Icelandic air ambulance by helicopter
Research grant of ISK 19 million

Björn Gunnarsson, associate professor at the University of Akureyri Institute of Health Science Research and chief physician of the air ambulance service of Akureyri Hospital, was recently awarded a Rannís research grant of ISK 19 million in sponsorship of his research project. The aim of the research is to determine suitable and reasonable locations for helicopters operating as air ambulance in Iceland.

“Icelandic air ambulances often have to undertake long journeys, something which is likely to affect the prognosis of patients with time-sensitive medical conditions,” says Björn Gunnarsson in relation to the topic of Icelandic air ambulance services.

The results of the project will enable researchers to present proposals as to the locations of helicopter air ambulance bases which are best suited to the needs of the community, thus contributing to equal conditions within the health service and even improving the prognosis of seriously ill and injured patients.

“I am very pleased to receive this grant, especially since access to health services is unequal due to residential circumstances and I feel we urgently need to seek ways to reduce this difference as far as possible,” says Björn Gunnarsson.
