We welcome our two new Head of School, Tom and Barry

The University of Akureyri welcomed two new employees last spring, Head of School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Thomas Barry, and Head of School of Health, Business and Natural Sciences, Brynjar Karlsson. They have both started working in their positions.

Thomas Barry studied geography and finished his BSc and MA degrees in geography from the University of Cork. He finished his Ph.D. in governance and public administration at the University of Iceland.

For the last fifteen years Tom has been the acting manager for Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF). CAFF serves as a vehicle to cooperate on species and habitat management and utilization, to share information on management techniques and regulatory regimes, and to facilitate more knowledgeable decision-making in the Arctic. In his position as manager for CAFF, Tom worked with scientists from various universities and research units all over the world.

Tom´s experience is both domestic and international and he is knowledgeable about the environment the universities work in and public administration. He has ample experience in teaching and lecturing in the university environment and has thought at the University of Akureyri, University Centre of the Westfjords, University of Limerick, and University College of Cork, both in Ireland.

Brynjar Karlsson finished his Ph.D. in physics at Université de Francois Rabelais in France. Brynjar is experienced and very knowledgeable both domestically and internationally when it comes to universities and research. His research emphasis has been the same as is taught in the School of Health, Business and Natural Sciences. Through the years he has held various managerial positions within the university environment.
