Sustainable Bio-Leather: A PhD Project on Salmon Skin Remodelling

PH.D. PROJECT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This doctoral research project explores innovative methods for processing Icelandic salmon skin, with the aim of transforming it into wide, uniform sheets. These sheets will subsequently be tanned into leather and dyed for further application.

One of the primary challenges is to separate the delicate skin without causing undue damage, and to successfully reconstruct it into a strong, cohesive material. The goal is to produce a durable end product capable of withstanding the tanning process and being used in a range of commercial products.

This research forms part of the candidate’s PhD studies. The researcher is also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nanna Lín, a start-up company collaborating on the project.
