Social Sciences Seminar

The first Social Sciences Seminar of the semester will be held September 5th at 11:00 in room M101 and online.

Markus Meckl, professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, delivers the talk: The post-heroic society.

A European identity which fosters a sense of belonging is an aim to strive for as it is crucial for the Union’s future. However, recent transformations in European commemorative practices have challenged the idea of a united European identity. Historiography has used the term “post-heroic” to describe this change in memory-making and commemorative practices, which is manifested in the fact that public recognition is no longer attributed to heroic deed, but to the victims of conflicts and wars, therefore representing a "shift from heroization to victimization" (Sabrow, 2011).

All welcome!
