UNAK receives the 2026 Jafnvægisvogin recognition
“A workplace where people have equal opportunities to make a difference”

Vaka Óttarsdóttir, Division head of Human Resources and Communications, says the recognition encourages the University to continue advancing equality.

“We are proud to receive this recognition. We want the University to be a workplace where people have equal opportunities to make a difference, grow and use their talents. Gender balance in management is an important part of that. This recognition also encourages us to continue reviewing our practices and ensuring that equality and inclusion are reflected in our daily work,” says Vaka.

A workplace where everyone belongs

Equality is embedded in the University Strategy to 2030. The strategy sets out a clear vision for an attractive workplace built on inclusion, solidarity, and an encouraging culture. The aim is to create a diverse university community where everyone belongs and people receive support and opportunities to develop in their studies and careers.

These priorities are supported by UNAK’s ambitious Gender Equality plan. The plan covers staff, students, and the University’s impact on society, and includes measurable actions with defined timelines. Its objectives include ensuring equal opportunities, nurturing diversity, and strengthening inclusion, alongside supporting equal pay and a family-friendly working environment.

Promoting gender balance in leadership across Iceland

Jafnvægisvogin is an initiative led by the Icelandic Association of Businesswomen in Iceland (FKA) to promote a more equal representation of women and men in leadership across Iceland. The recognition is awarded to companies, institutions, and municipalities that have achieved a minimum representation of 40% for each gender at the highest management level.
