Graduate from UNAK appointed Executive Secretary of NAFO

Brynhildur Benediktsdóttir, senior expert at the Ministry of Food, Fisheries and Agriculture in Iceland was appointed Executive Secretary of The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) at its Annual Meeting in Porto, Portugal 19-23 September 2022.

NAFO is an intergovernmental fisheries science and management body and its main objective is to ensure long term conservation and sustainable use of the fishery resources in the Convention Area and, in so doing, to safeguard the marine ecosystems in which these resources are found.

Brynhildur has extensive work experience in the field of fisheries and ocean affairs and was employed at the Department of Fisheries at the Ministry in 2008. Her work in the Ministry has included domestic fisheries management as well as being Icelandic lead negotiator and head of delegation in various international fora, including Nordic Council of Ministers, OECD, ICCAT, NEAF, NAFO, FAO, WTO, and UN-meetings.

Brynhildur has a BS in Economics from the University of Iceland, a Diploma in Ocean Law from the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy, and finished a MS in Business Administration from the University of Akureyri in the autumn 2022.
