Professor Helga Kristjánsdóttir at the University of Akureyri presented on Iceland’s economy, tourism, and opportunities in international trade on a session organized for US senators visiting Reykjavík

Professor Helga Kristjánsdóttir at the University of Akureyri participated in the National Conference of State , 1 or 2 persons from each Legislatures session held in Reykjavík on September 15, 2025, which solely included U.S. Senators state.

Her invited talk, titled “Transatlantic Trade, Tourism, and Economics”, reviewed the development of the Icelandic economy over recent decades. She placed particular emphasis on the role of international trade and tourism, while also highlighting opportunities for Iceland in international economics, especially in relation to transatlantic business ties.

“The objective of my presentation was to shed light on recent economic developments and the opportunities that arise for Iceland in connection with international business, both in the United States and Europe,” said Professor Kristjánsdóttir. “It was also important to engage in panel discussions with fellow experts about potential U.S. business opportunities in Iceland and to answer general questions on the subject.”

Reflecting on the event, she added: “This was of great value to me, and I am honored to have taken part in an event of such caliber. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to share insights about the Icelandic economy with U.S. legislators.” Professor Kristjánsdóttir noted that she hopes her presentation left participants with positive ideas about international business opportunities — with Iceland positioned as a potential gateway into Europe. She underlined an important takeaway: “In an ever-changing world, it is essential to maintain an ongoing dialogue about international opportunities.”
