UNAK’s Equality Council is looking for students to participate in focus group interviews this autumn to share their experiences of studying and university life. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the experiences and circumstances of students from diverse backgrounds at the University of Akureyri so the University can better support the needs of diverse student groups and support a learning environment where all have the chance to thrive.
The project is funded by the Fund for LGBTQ+ Issues (Framkvæmdasjóður hinsegin málefna). We want to hear the perspectives of students from diverse backgrounds, with different experiences and needs, including in relation to gender identity, sexual orientation, origin, disability, and neurodiversity. This may include, for example, students of international or immigrant backgrounds, students with disabilities, and students with ADHD, autism, or dyslexia. However, all students at the University of Akureyri who are interested in sharing their experiences are welcome to participate.
The focus group interviews will provide participants with an opportunity to share their experiences of their studies and the university environment, discuss what is working well, and identify areas for improvement. The focus groups will be organised so that students with similar backgrounds or experiences take part in discussions together, allowing different perspectives to emerge and giving participants the space to discuss their own experiences.
Students interested in taking part are encouraged to contact Lara W. Hoffmann, who supports the work of the Equality Council, at laraw@unak.is for further information.
The project aligns closely with the University of Akureyri’s ambitious Equality Plan for 2025–2028. The plan emphasises equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion, with the aim of ensuring that everyone feels part of the university community and that the study and working environment accommodates people’s diverse needs.
