Support needs of adult children in the care of aging mothers

About the project

The main objective of the doctoral project is to investigate gender differences in the participation of adult children in the care of their mothers in nursing homes and the children's needs for education and support from health professionals. The project is divided into three studies (I-III).

The aim of study I, a qualitative study using the Vancouver School of Doing Phenomenology, is to examine the experiences of sons caring for their mothers in a nursing home, exploring their feelings related to the maternal relationship and their need for education and support from health professionals.

The aim of study II, is to translate, validate, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the F-INVOLVE/F-IMPORTANT scale that assesses the participation of family members in the care of loved ones in nursing homes.

The aim of study III, a cross-sectional study which is based on data from study II, is to examine gender differences in the participation of adult children in the care of their mothers in nursing homes and the children's needs for education and support from health professionals.
