The Science Council is a permanent University Council committee. It advises the University Council and Central Administration on the advancement of scientific research at the University of Akureyri. The Science Council can hold conferences and in other ways initiate a discourse on the areas of science practised at the University of Akureyri. The Science Council does not have power to make decisions on research matters.
The Science Council is composed of representatives from the University faculties. They are selected to three-year terms from the groups of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors of each [School at the University.]1. Each [School]2 nominates one representative and one substitute.
When nominating, care must be taken to ensure that the representatives reflect the strongest research areas of the faculties. A student representative, chosen for one year at a time by the [Union of Students at the University of Akureyri]3, and a deputy student representative, also sit on the Council.
The Rector appoints two Representatives and two Deputy Representatives. In selecting the Rector‘s Representatives, care should be taken to ensure the greatest possible academic diversity within the Council and strengthen the University outwardly. The Rector appoints the council Chair.

These rules are set by the University Council in accordance with Article 11 of the Regulations for the University of Akureyri No. 466/2007, and take effect immediately.
