THE UNIVERSITY OF AKUREYRI AWARDED THE GREEN FLAG FOR THE SIXTH TIME – A MILESTONE WORTH CELEBRATING

A representative of the Icelandic Environment Association (Landvernd) will formally present the Green Flag to the Rector of the University of Akureyri for the sixth time at a ceremony on Friday, 10 April. The event will take place in Miðborg.

The University of Akureyri first received the Green Flag in 2013, becoming the first university in Iceland to do so and among the first universities in the world to raise the Green Flag.

The Green Flag is awarded by Landvernd as part of an international environmental education programme and recognises schools that demonstrate a genuine and sustained commitment to environmental responsibility. The University of Akureyri is one of only two Icelandic universities participating in the Green Flag programme. Receiving the Green Flag for the sixth time is a testament to the tireless efforts of students and staff who have actively contributed to environmental initiatives. We are truly proud of everyone who has played a part in achieving this milestone.

The aims of the Green Flag programme are to:

  • Improve the school environment and reduce waste, as well as water and energy consumption.
  • Strengthen the sense of community within the school.
  • Increase environmental awareness through education and activities both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Promote democratic practices in school governance when decisions affecting students are made.
  • Provide students with the education and skills needed to address environmental challenges.
  • Foster international understanding and language skills.
  • Strengthen connections between the school and the wider community, including businesses and the public.

Further information about the programme can be found on the Landvernd website.

Everyone is warmly welcome!
